Coursework Overview
Through the development of 3 projects, Design 3153 explores a variety of photographic, typographic, and graphic elements to create various levels of integration and juxtaposition.
Project 1: Type and Image Composition Sketchbook
Description
Create a sketchbook of 10 graphic compositions of type and image (5 spreads) that represent the theme of winter patterns.
Project 2: Winter Pattern Posters
Description
Apply design principles of type and image compositions to visually express and convey meaning in a practical visual communication design application.
Process
Develop one or two narratives based on the winter pattern sketchbook from project 1 and explore multiple design studies for class discussions and reviews.
Narrative: Based off of the "most wonderful time of the year" spread from my sketchbook (spread 2), I decided to twist the joyful narrative into a darker approach about people experiencing the holiday season during the war in Ukraine where it is not the most wonderful experience. The client I chose is, UN Crisis Relief.
Continue to ideate poster designs and explore current concepts.
Narrow down the poster designs to a few that will be developed further.
Continue to refine and develop the designs into 2 poster compositions.
Further refinement.
Final Posters
Project 3: Form and Rhythmic Progression Accordion Book
Description
The Goal: Create a final printed accordion-fold book that is composed of fourteen 8"x8" square panels hinged to unfold in a spiral sequential structure.
Process
Mind Mapping using the application Miro. I split my map into two categories; elements about kids who have a lot during Christmas and the kids who don't have anything.
Storyboard of ways to visualize my narrative across all of the spreads.
Refined story board using images and text.
Final spread iterations.
